Suspect shot, killed by police at Lyndhurst library

Lyndhurst police say the man who was shot and killed by officers inside the Lyndhurst Public Library was armed with a knife.

Shots rang out at around 1:30 p.m. Friday on the third floor of the library when two Lyndhurst police officers tried to apprehend Kevin Allen, 36.

According to the Lyndhurst police, Allen was wanted for contempt of court and failing to show up for a work release program.

One of the officers recognized Allen as he walked into the library and they followed him inside.

During a confrontation, Allen was shot and killed. Police say he had a knife at the time.

Several library patrons witnessed the shooting, including a child. They are being questioned by police.

The two officers involved were taken to the hospital for evaluation, but they were not injured.

The Lyndhurst Police Department and Bergen County Prosecutor's Office are investigating.
