Skydiver in Wantage crash-landing dies
A skydiver who hit the ground hard during a jump in Wantage has died from his injuries.
The family of Paul Hayes confirmed that he died Friday night. Hayes, who was in his late 30s, sustained serious injuries while skydiving with the company Skydive Sussex at Sussex Airport Thursday.
Hayes was being treated at Morristown Medical Center Thursday night.
According to a co-owner of Skydive Sussex, Hayes initiated a low turn that built up speed too close to the ground, and Hayes couldn't level out before landing.
Hayes was going about 60 to 70 mph when he hit the ground. Officials say his parachute did open and was functioning properly.
Hayes had as many as 800 jumps under his belt.
