Prosecutors: Teacher fatally shot in domestic dispute

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says a teacher was shot and killed on her front steps following an apparent domestic dispute.
According to one witness, the shooting occurred at around 10 p.m. Friday on Tremont Avenue in East Orange. The witness says Latrena May, 27, was standing on her front porch, loudly speaking with a police officer who was on her sidewalk.
May's boyfriend, 41-year-old Andre Higgs, allegedly walked up to May, pointed a gun at her head and fired. The officer then fired at Higgs, who was struck, but managed to escape into the house and barricade himself inside.
Police eventually pulled Higgs from the house after about an hour. Higgs was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
News 12 has learned that May worked as a teacher at nearby Pride Academy Charter School.
No motive has been revealed in the shooting, but neighbors say the couple had domestic issues.
May and Higgs had one child together. The young girl was not injured in the incident.
Higgs is charged with murder and weapons possession.
