Report: David Wildstein to plead guilty in Bridge-Gate scandal
Former Port Authority official David Wildstein is expected to plead guilty for his involvement in the George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal in Fort Lee, according to a report by Bloomberg Business.
It is possible Wildstein's plea is part of a deal to provide testimony on others involved in the Bridge-Gate controversy. Sources close to the situation tell News 12 New Jersey that there will be a major development in the case on Friday.
However, the United States' Attorney's Office has refused to comment on whether or not anything will happen in court.
Calls made by News 12 New Jersey to Wildstein's attorney Alan Zegas for comment were not returned.
The case stems from the September 2013 closure of the Fort Lee local access lanes to the George Washington Bridge. The closures caused massive traffic gridlock in the town for several days.
Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich believed it to be retribution for his decision to not endorse Gov. Chris Christie in the 2013 gubernatorial election.
Deputy Executive Director of the Port Authority Bill Baroni testified to the New Jersey Assembly Transportation Committee that the closures were the result of a traffic study that the agency was conducting.
Baroni resigned from his position in December 2013 in the wake of the scandal. Wildstein also handed in his resignation.
Gov. Christie's deputy chief of staff, Bridget Anne Kelly, was fired by the governor after emails came out linking her to the closures.
A federal grand jury has been meeting for months over possible indictments.
When asked about Wildstein's plea at a public event held Tuesday, the governor said that he knows the truth and is not concerned. Gov. Christie has denied any involvement in the scandal.
