Weeklong hip-hop seminar held at Essex County College

Essex County College is featuring a weeklong seminar that focuses on hip-hop in America.

The Newark campus is hosting the Hip-Hop Education Week. It will focus on the social, cultural and economic growth of hip-hop.

The seminars are open to all Essex County College students, but organizers hope members of the public will come check out the program, especially if they don't consider themselves traditional fans.

"This is a great opportunity for them to expand their horizons, to come to a welcoming environment," says Dr. Akil Khalfani, a professor at the school.

The course runs all week at the school. The topic for Tuesday will be hip-hop's portrayal in the media.
