The son of the first black baseball player to join the American League joined New Jersey officials to celebrate the release of a commemorative U.S. postage stamp in his father's honor.
The new stamp honoring Larry Doby was unveiled today at a post office in Paterson.
The South Carolina-born Doby attended Eastside High School in Paterson, where he earned 11 varsity letters in several different sports. The Hall of Famer began his professional baseball career with the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League.
After serving in World War II, Doby returned to the Eagles before joining the Cleveland Indians in 1947. He was a seven-time All-Star.
Doby, who also played for the White Sox and Tigers, died in 2003 in Montclair.
