Carjacking ends with crash into bodega, woman hurt

Two 18-year-old Newark residents face numerous charges after the carjacked vehicle they were in struck and injured a pedestrian and then crashed into a city storefront.

Hillside police initially tried to stop the vehicle around 12:10 p.m. yesterday after learning it had been carjacked in Maplewood earlier in the day. But authorities say the driver, 18-year-old Andrew Cappel Jr., sped off and drove into Newark with officers in pursuit.

The pedestrian, identified only as a 48-year-old woman, was hit a short time later. She was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for her injuries.

After the car hit the storefront, Cappel and his passenger, Tamanisha Mitchell, tried to flee on foot. But they were soon captured by police.

The bodega remained open while owners worked to repair the damage.
