2 charged for allegedly defrauding people out of $9,000 in Craigslist rental scam

The Linden Police Department says that two people are charged in connection with a series of Craigslist rental scams that defrauded victims out of more than $9,000.

Police have been investigating the crimes since August 2016 when they say Allan Betancourt and Myra Sullivan began falsely listing apartments for rent on the website. They allegedly operated under the aliases Marcos Cardenas and Mirna Grant.

At least four families answered the ad for a home for rent on Cedar Avenue. They all apparently paid cash in advance and were given keys that did not work when they tried to move into the home.

"The public played a critical role in identifying these suspects," said Linden Police Chief Jonathan Parham in a statement. "The credit for these arrests belongs to the dozens of citizens who cooperated with detectives to make the identification of these suspects possible."

Betancourt and Sullivan were arrested on Feb. 22.

Linden police are looking for other potential victims and are asking anyone who may have been scammed to call the police department in the town where the scam took place.
