New details emerge in Highland Park beating, rape case
New details of a violent attack on a Highland Park woman last month have emerged after the suspect appeared before a judge.
On Tuesday, prosecutors told the court Brandon Cox, 23, of Franklin Township, approached the victim with a gun, forced her into the basement of a nearby apartment building, and then severely beat and sexually assaulted her.
The victim's injuries included a fractured skull, broken nose and stitches to her face.
The prosecutor described in detail the attack and threats made against the woman and her baby.
"My understanding from the victim's statement is that when the 9-month-old child started crying, Mr. Cox threatened to kill the child if the victim did not quiet the child," said the prosecutor.
According to prosecutors, they have DNA tying Cox to the crime.
His girlfriend also allegedly tried to use the victim's ATM card less than an hour after the attack.
Cox has been charged with 16 counts in the attack on Harper Avenue.
Charges include kidnapping, attempted murder, sexual assault, armed robbery and endangering the welfare of a child.
