Father dies following Union City fire that killed child

The father of a child killed in a fire Saturday in Union City has also died, News 12 is told.



The fire tore through several apartment buildings as well as a church in the Summit Avenue area.



A priest with the Church of Saints Joseph and Michael tells News 12 that the little boy who perished in the fire 2-year-old Eddie Sanchez. He was in the first apartment that caught fire.



The boy's dad had suffered severe burns and was hospitalized, but the priest says the man passed away Saturday night. The child's mother remains in critical condition.



The cause of the fire is not yet known, but officials say flames broke out along an apartment on 14th Street and quickly spread to nearby buildings.



Strong winds carried embers a block away to the church steeple, causing fireballs and even more damage.



At least a dozen other people were injured, including several firefighters.



Mass for the Saints Joseph and Michael parish will be held at the Mother Seaton School for the time being.
