Students, teachers mourn tragic death of Westfield teen fatally struck by off-duty NJ state trooper

Students and teachers at Westfield High School continue to mourn the death of a classmate who was fatally struck by a vehicle over the weekend.

Freshman Theresa DiFalco was with friends from her school theater group Saturday night around 8:30 when she was fatally struck by a service vehicle driven by an off-duty New Jersey State Police trooper, according to the Union County prosecutor.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. at the 1800 block of Central Avenue in Westfield. DiFalco was pronounced dead at the scene.

Grief counselors were available Monday at the high school.

"She had such an impact on so many people that it's going to be weird to be without her," says freshman Madison Bryant.

Hundreds of people attended a vigil Sunday night for DiFalco.

"I haven't spoken with anyone but I have a lot of friends in the theater department who I imagine knew her very well and will be speaking with grief counselors," says senior Jack Hall.

Authorities say an investigation into the crash is underway. The name of the officer has not been released.
