Port Authority police arrest 3 inside Lincoln Tunnel, causing traffic backup

Port Authority police arrested three people inside the Lincoln Tunnel Friday evening, leading to a major traffic backup.

Authorities say a New Jersey state trooper tried to pull over the Mercury Villager minivan on the New Jersey Turnpike in Newark for an unknown traffic violation. Officials say the driver would not stop, and the trooper chased the minivan toward the Lincoln Tunnel.

When the minivan approached the tunnel, the Port Authority Police Department got involved.

Video and pictures posted on social media show the minivan stopped right outside the Lincoln Tunnel on the Manhattan side. Other pictures show police officers arresting a person inside the tunnel.

Officials say three people were arrested for failing to stop for a police officer. It was not immediately known if they would face other charges.

The incident caused the closure of the south tube of the tunnel for about an hour. Traffic was backed up and delayed due to the arrests.
