3 Newark charter schools to close down at end of school year

Three Newark charter schools are set to shut their doors at the end of this school year.

The New Jersey Department of Education announced that Newark Prep Charter School, Merit Prep Charter School, and Paulo Freire Charter School will be forced close due to a lack of enrollment.

Parents at the Paulo Freire Charter School were given letters about the closing Thursday.

A mother of a student tells News 12 New Jersey that she is worried that her son won't have many options for the next school year.

"This is really bad," says Monique Rivera. "He's probably just going to take online classes."

Students say that because the decision to close the schools came so late in the school year, there may not be enough room for them at other preferred schools due to the demand from other students.
