Police investigate reports of fetus found at Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission

Homicide detectives with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are investigating reports of a fetus found at the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission.

Authorities were called to the Wilson Avenue facility around 2:30 p.m. Thursday after someone apparently found the fetus inside a sewer intake screen at the water treatment facility.

A spokesperson for the prosecutor's office says that detectives are working to confirm if the item found was a fetus and if it was developed enough to have been alive at any point.

A Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission official referred questions to the prosecutor's office, but says that a discovery of this kind is a very unusual occurrence at the facility.
