Investigation underway in South Orange after swastikas, hateful language discovered on bridge

Authorities in Essex County are looking for the person who vandalized a pedestrian bridge with graffiti images at South Mountain Reservation in South Orange.

The pedestrian bridge is a popular spot to walk along, and people running Tuesday discovered the disturbing photos that have since been cleaned up.

The images included swastikas and hateful language.

"I think we were mostly shaken after seeing first that our JCC had a threat a couple weeks ago, and now right here in our woods [where] we come to every day," says Mindy Gelman, of South Orange.

People throughout the community, including rabbis and local leaders, came together Tuesday night to clean it up.

Many others also gathered with candles and messages of peace.

The Essex County Sheriff's Office is investigating and has stepped up patrols in the area.
