Police arrest man accused of raping woman walking with child in Highland Park

HIGHLAND PARK -

Authorities have arrested a man accused of raping a woman at gunpoint earlier this month in Highland Park.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office charged Brandon Cox, 23, with 16 counts in the attack on the woman on Harper Avenue Feb. 19.

Investigators say the victim was walking on Harper Avenue with a child when Cox approached her with a gun, forced her into the basement of a nearby apartment building, and then raped and repeatedly punched her.

Cox then allegedly left the area and the victim was able to call police from a neighbor's home. The victim was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick after the attack.

Cox faces numerous charges including kidnapping, attempted murder, sexual assault, armed robbery and endangering the welfare of a child.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office says that Cox was arrested earlier this week on an unrelated charge.
