Newark officer, suspect sent to hospital after shooting near school

A Newark police officer and a suspect were sent to the hospital after the officer shot the suspect in the arm.

The shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. Monday near Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Prince Street in Newark.

Witnesses tell News 12 New Jersey that the officer was chasing the man prior to the shooting. The witnesses say they believe the suspect also had a gun, but this has not been confirmed by authorities.

The shooting happened inside an apartment complex near a park and elementary school. The school was put into lockdown for a time as a precaution.

Authorities say the officer and the suspect are expected to be OK.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident.
