Worker pinned under large pile of steel at Knickerbocker Beds company in Carlstadt
Authorities say a factory worker was seriously injured when a large pile of steel accidentally fell on him.
The incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday at the Knickerbocker Beds bed frame company in Carlstadt. Authorities say the 56-year-old man's legs were pinned under the pile but that he was alert and conscious as rescue crews worked to free him.
The man was rescued about an hour later and was taken to Hackensack University Hospital.
Carlstadt police say the worker suffered "extensive" leg injuries. His name and further details on his condition have not been disclosed.
A ceiling hoist was being used to move a bundle of steel when it somehow lost its load and it fell on the worker, according to police.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.
Knickerbocker Beds is located at 770 Commercial Ave. in Carlstadt. The company is family-run and has been in Carlstadt for generations.
