Route 17 in Paramus reopens following tractor-trailer accident

Route 17 in Paramus has reopened after a tractor-trailer accident completely shut down the northbound lanes.

It happened today at around 6 a.m. just south of Route 4, by Farview Avenue in front of the Garden State Plaza mall.

A tractor-trailer was slowing for traffic when his brakes locked up, causing him to disable in the center lane.

The driver activated his four-way flashers and phoned for help.

Another tractor carrying a steel beam load attempted to avoid collision with the disabled tractor, but struck the rear of the vehicle and then the center median, causing the load to spill over the lanes.

One beam came across the divider and struck a vehicle traveling southbound.

A person in that car had to be cut from the vehicle and taken to a hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Another vehicle was struck by a steel beam. The driver complained of chest and back pain.
