Crews contain forest fire that burned about 600 acres in Manchester Township

Firefighters have contained a large forest fire that scorched about 600 acres of land in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area in Ocean County.

State officials say the fire was initially discovered around 10 a.m. Sunday in Manchester Township. The fire did not cause any property damage and evacuations were not necessary.

Officials did have to close part of Route 539 because of the smoke.

Crews were monitoring the remnants of the fire to make sure it does not reignite.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
