Belleville councilman under fire for Facebook posts

A councilman in Belleville is under fire for what critics say are inflammatory posts on his personal Facebook page.

Several callers to News 12 complained about posts made by Councilman Kevin Kennedy, who has been on the council for 20 years. The callers cited the use of sexist, racist and violent language in the posts.

One post showed commentary on the so-called refugee ban with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks as a backdrop.

The Belleville town manager tells News 12 that since the posts were made on Kennedy's personal page, it's outside of his purview.

But some residents expressed shock.

"He's elected to represent me and my family, and my kids, and I don't want somebody like that representing me. You know, I want someone who is fair and someone who's not thinking about assassinations and stuff," said one resident.

News 12 reached out to Councilman Kennedy multiple times over two days for comments, but did not receive a response.

Kennedy did give a quote to the Belleville Times that says he stands by his posts, and he added, "If you don't like it, don't read my Facebook."
