One lane in each direction now open on Bayonne Bridge's upper deck

Drivers are now able to cross portions of Bayonne Bridge's upper deck. One lane in each direction on the bridge's upper deck opened this morning.

All of the bridge's lanes are set to open by 2019.

The bridge was closed as crews worked to raise it to allow larger ships to get into port. It was raised from 151 feet above the average high tide to 215 feet.

According to officials, construction has been similar to performing heart surgery while the patient is running a marathon.

They still plan to have the lower level gone by the end of this year and hope to reduce the number of daily closures since construction began.
