Judge rules Kenilworth girl can play on Catholic school’s boys basketball team

A 12-year-old Kenilworth girl will be allowed to play on the boys basketball team for the Catholic school that she attends, the girl's father tells News 12 New Jersey.

Scott Phillips tells News 12 that a judge ruled that his daughter Sydney will now be allowed to play on the St. Theresa's School boys basketball team.

The Phillips family originally asked for Sydney to be allowed on the boys team because the girls team was disbanded due to a lack of players. The school denied the request and said that Sydney missed the deadline to sign up.

The family then sued the school and lost.

Sydney and her sister were then kicked out of the school due to the litigation, but judge ruled that they should be allowed back in.

A spokesman for the Newark Archdiocese says that the school will abide by the ruling to allow Sydney to play for the team.

The team's next game is Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Theresa's.
