Toms River man Andrew Mayer sentenced to 180 days for leaving dog to die in icy river

A Toms River man will spend some time in jail for leaving his dog to die inside his truck that sunk into a frozen river.

Andrew Mayer was sentenced to 180 days in the Ocean County Jail after pleading guilty to animal cruelty.

Mayer drove his pick-up truck onto the frozen Toms River in 2015, but the ice gave away and the truck sank. Mayer was able to escape, but left his dog, a 2-year-old boxer mix named Rolo, inside. He failed to notify authorities about the incident, sparking a massive search and rescue effort.

Another passenger was also inside the truck at the time, but got out before it went into the ice.
