Man admits he mistakenly shot, killed man on street
A man who mistakenly shot and killed a man when he fired at someone else on an Asbury Park street has pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter.
Bryan Burford entered his plea Tuesday, the day his murder trial was scheduled to start.
The 24-year-old Asbury Park man admitted firing several shots at a rival and that one of the bullets mistakenly hit 20-year-old Tyrell Howard, who died from his wounds. It wasn't clear if the intended target was injured in the shooting.
Authorities say Burford had been paroled from prison a few weeks before the shooting occurred.
Burford could have faced life in prison without the chance of parole if he was convicted of murder. Monmouth County prosecutors will recommend he get an 18-year term when he's sentenced May 18.
