Fire destroys nearly a dozen boats at Seaport Inlet Marina in Belmar

A large fire destroyed nearly a dozen boats at the Seaport Inlet Marina in Belmar Tuesday afternoon.

The fire broke out just before 1 p.m. at the marina on Fifth Avenue and quickly spread to multiple boats that were up on dry docks.

Witnesses described large plumes of thick, black smoke that could be seen for miles.

Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty says that no injuries were reported and no neighboring homes were damaged by the fire. Doherty says that things may have been different had the fire occurred Monday, because of the strong winds.

Residents in those nearby buildings were evacuated because power was cut to the area when a utility pole was damaged by the fire. The mayor says it was expected to take several hours to restore the power.

The DEP was on the scene to check the air quality in the area due to the amount of hazardous materials that might have burned.

The plastics and chemicals making up the boat, as well as the fuel inside, most likely contributed to the intense fire.

The cause was not immediately known.
