NTSB: West Caldwell plane that crashed on Jan. 21 lost engine power after takeoff

A small plane that crashed into a residential area in Essex County last month apparently lost engine power just after takeoff, according to the National Transportation Safety Board's initial report.

The Hawker Beachcraft Bonanza plane crashed in West Caldwell on Jan. 21 soon after it took off from Essex County Airport.

The plane hit the roof of a warehouse before crashing into the ground, the NTSB says. The plane then burst into the flames.

The pilot was seriously injured in the crash.

The NTSB report says that the plane had been inspected several days before the crash and had accrued over 250 hours of operation.
