Irvington man accused of assaulting Newark pastor
An Irvington man was charged in connection with an assault on a Newark pastor.
Authorities say Michael Healy approached the pastor near the intersection of Broad and Court streets Saturday evening. He apparently questioned the pastor about his religious beliefs and then assaulted him.
Healy was charged with simple assault, but police say more charges are possible.
The pastor was not seriously hurt.
This is the second unprovoked attack against a Newark clergyman in recent weeks. Newark resident Charles Miller was charged with assaulting Newark auxiliary bishop Rev. Manuel Cruz during a Mass on Jan. 28. Miller said he assaulted Cruz because he was angry about the Catholic Church's involvement in police brutality cases.
