Video surfaces showing racist taunts at Dover vs. Jefferson high school basketball game
A video has surfaced that appears to show racial taunts being shouted during a high school basketball between two Morris County schools.
The incident happened at the game between Dover and Jefferson high schools on Jan. 27 at Jefferson High School. Spectators in the stands could be heard yelling racial taunts when an African American player from Dover had the ball. The Dover school superintendent says that "Build a Wall" was also chanted at some of the school's Hispanic players.
Former Jefferson High School student Laura Gonzalez says that she's seen the video and was upset by it.
"That was disrespectful. I mean we're full of different cultures, nationalities, so I just don't think that was right," she says.
Both schools' superintendents are investigating the matter and have notified the county and the state. The Jefferson superintendent says that once the investigation is complete, the people involved will be disciplined accordingly
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association has ordered both school districts to come up with a solution or else they will get involved.
