Kenilworth girl who wanted to play on Saint Theresa’s boys basketball team kicked out of school

A 12-year-old Kenilworth girl who wanted to play on a Catholic school's boys basketball team was told she is no longer welcome at the school altogether.

Sydney Phillips wanted to play on the boys team at Saint Theresa's because the girls team was disbanded. But the school said she could not play on the team because she missed the deadline to sign up.

Phillips' family filed a lawsuit, but a judge sided with the school.

The girl's father Scott Phillips says that he received a letter from the Archdiocese of Newark saying the seventh grader and her sister are no longer welcome at Saint Theresa's starting Thursday.

A spokesman for the Archdiocese says he could not comment on student matters.

The news came on the same day Phillips was the guest of honor at WNBA's New York Liberty team's training facility, where she and her friends were invited to practice with the team.
