South Brunswick couple thwarts burglars targeting neighbors’ home
Three burglars targeting a home in South Brunswick were caught in the act by a vigilant couple.
Marie and Tom Doherty are credited with stopping the burglary. They not only called 911 to report a burglary in action but actually chased after the three suspects getting away.
"It was scary, very scary but yet I feel good about myself that I did something right," Marie Doherty says.
Marie says that she was outside on her back porch around noon Friday when she noticed something strange at her neighbor's home.
"I just saw a light black male going through the window and the curtains are flowing and I knew something wasn't right," she says.
She says that she ran to tell her husband, who called 911. While Tom was on the phone with the dispatcher, he says he saw two more people inside a black getaway car, and a third suspect on foot and started to chase after them.
"The guy came out of the house, started running and I started chasing and telling him to stop," Tom says.
"It scared me because I'm yelling 'Tommy' and he's not answering me and I don't know if I'm going to find him in the backyard with a knife in his back," Marie says.
The three suspects outran Tom, but were soon apprehended by police who just arrived near the scene. Two adults and a juvenile were charged with the crime.
Police say they are grateful to the Dohertys because the suspects may be linked to a burglary in Franklin Township earlier that morning and several others throughout Somerset County.
