The Better Business Bureau says that a nationwide scam tracking system, which came to New Jersey about a year ago, is already having a large impact in stopping scams.

The BBB says that the system not only tracks ongoing scams in real time, but it can also serve as an early warning system.

"Not only can you get information won that's happening, you can report and hopefully warn other people about what's going on in your area," says the BBB's Melissa Companick.

Companick says that in its first year the tracker even helped law enforcement officials stop a group of scam artists. Authorities in Indiana last October raided a call center and arrested 70 people in connection with an IRS phone scam that costs victims in New Jersey millions of dollars.

The information gathered by the BBB's tracker was partially responsible for the raid.

"Our information is funneled up to local and state and federal law enforcement, and they can kind of do a sweep of where the reports are and then take action on it," Companick says.

The scam tracker can be found on the Better Business Bureau's website.
