Elderly man killed in Little Ferry house fire while family was away
An elderly man was killed in a morning Little Ferry house fire, and neighbors say the man's family was away on vacation when it happened.
Firefighters were called to 47 Pickens St. around 8 a.m. Wednesday for reports of a fire. Witnesses say that the flames were intense.
"The flames were shooting out from the front, from the back, from all over the place," says neighbor Joy Ortiz. "It was horrible, it was horrible. I just kept thinking to myself 'My God, is anybody in there?"
Fire crews did not find anyone inside the home at first, but then found the man on the second floor. Witnesses say the flames seemed to be concentrated on the second level of the home.
Ortiz says the grandfather was the only one home at the time and the rest of the family was away.
"To be on vacation and have to come home to something like this is beyond any wild expectation," Ortiz says. "So very very sad."
The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office is involved in the investigation.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but officials say they do not believe that it is suspicious.
