Community on alert after coyote attacks man on the Columbia Trail in Long Valley

A Morris County community is on alert after they learned a coyote attacked a 66-year-old man who was out walking on the Columbia Trail in Long Valley.

The trail is a 15-mile scenic path that goes through Hunterdon and Morris counties. It is a popular destination for runners and bikers.

Neighbors say they were surprised to hear that a coyote attacked the man, who was out on the trail with some friends near Fairview Avenue Wednesday.

"I always make sure when I do go out I have my key chain with a whistle," says resident Kathy Kavanaugh. "Although I never thought coyote. I think bears."

Morris County Park Police say the man was able to grab a stick to defend himself and fought off the animal. He was bit on his buttocks and leg, but refused an EMS ride to the hospital. He said he would get treated by his own private doctor.

Police eventually tracked the coyote down and euthanized it. It will be tested for rabies.
