Water main break threatens structural integrity of roadway in Middlesex

A water main break in Middlesex left some business owners fearful that the roadway would collapse.

The Middlesex fire chief tells News 12 New Jersey that he believes an 8-inch water main broke near 92 Baekeland Ave. around 10:45 a.m. Thursday.

Water was seen gushing down both sides of the road and at least one business was flooded.

Business owners say it was believed at one point that the roadway would be compromised, so they rushed to move their vehicles in case the roadway collapsed.

Utility crews were able to shore up the road and are in the process of making repairs.

Baekeland Avenue was closed in the area for repairs but was expected to reopen by Thursday night.
