Prosecutors identify teen gunned down in Newark apartment shooting as Kevin Barber

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has identified the 16-year-old who was killed when shots rang out near a Newark apartment complex Wednesday evening.

Kevin Barber was killed and three other teenage males were injured when gunfire erupted near the Hyatt Court housing complex on Hawkins Street.

Witnesses tell News 12 New Jersey that the four teens were playing basketball Wednesday evening, and then decided to go to the corner store to buy some candy. This is when they were apparently gunned down.

Multiple surveillance cameras in the area captured images of the shooting. In the video, numerous people are seen running away and then one falls to the ground.

Relatives tell News 12 that Barber was a student at East Side High School. Two of the other victims are expected to survive, but the third is said to be in grave condition.

No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made, according to the prosecutor. A motive was also not released.

Anyone who may have any information about the shooting is asked to call the Essex County prosecutor at 1-877-847-7432.
