Woman killed in Elizabeth fire

An 87-year-old woman was killed in a fire late Saturday night in Elizabeth.

Officials say the flames sparked around 11 p.m. inside a two-story home at 908 Flora St.

The woman was rushed to the hospital, where she later died. Police have not released her name at this time.

Two firefighters were burned while battling the flames and were taken to the Burn Center at St. Barnabas Medical Center. They were later released.

Fire officials say their efforts may have been delayed because the people inside tried to put out the fire themselves after it started on the first floor and waited several minutes before contacting them.

They also say efforts were slowed because someone had parked their vehicle blocking one of the hydrants.

Authorities say six other residents inside the home made it out safely and are being helped by the Red Cross.

The investigation continues into what may have sparked the deadly flames.

Officials say that any time there is a fire, it is best to first call for help and then try to put out the fire if it's possible to do so safely.
