Court rules St. Theresa's 7th-grade girl can’t play on boys basketball team

The New Jersey Superior Court has ruled that a 7th-grade girl from Kenilworth cannot play on the boys basketball team.

Sydney Phillips wanted to play for the St. Theresa's boys team after the school canceled the girls team because not enough girls participated.

The school and archdiocese said the family missed the deadline to register the 12-year-old. Her father, Scott Phillips, disputed that claim and sued. However, the court ruled against the family.

Phillips says he is disappointed, but that his daughter will play in other leagues.

"It's not the fact she doesn't play basketball, it's that she wanted to play for St. Theresa's. She has a great school spirit. I wish the school, the church and the archdiocese would embrace the spirit she had instead of breaking it," he says.

Phillips says he believes that if they had more time they could have won the case, but the basketball season is a short season.
