Monroe resident Joao Torres charged with killing his 46-year-old stepfather Christopher Ernst Sr.

A Monroe resident was charged with killing his 46-year-old stepfather in the garage of the home they shared on Garvey Drive.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office says Joao Torres, 26, struck his stepfather, Christopher Ernst Sr., in the head with an unknown object. The autopsy described Ernst's injuries as "chopping wounds to the head."

Police arrested Torres in a wooded area several miles from his home. They were first tipped off to the crime after receiving a phone call from someone concerned about Torres when he failed to show up for work.

Torres was charged with murder, as well as obstruction and resisting arrest.
