Family of deaf boy adopts deaf dog for Christmas
There is nothing quite like the special bond between a boy and his dog, especially for a boy and a dog who have something special in common - they are both deaf.
Adam "AJ" Vercelli is deaf, but can hear with the use of cochlear implants. His family surprised him on Christmas morning with Ellie, a terrier-mix rescue who is also deaf.
It was a dying wish from the boy's grandmother, who passed away a few days before Christmas. Noni, as she was called, heard about the deaf dog that needed a loving home and wanted to get it for her grandson.
"She was saying 'Get the dog. I'll keep the dog in my room' and I knew that was her way of getting the dog to AJ," says mom Stacy Vercelli.
AJ and his brothers received the dog on Christmas morning and were delighted to welcome Ellie into their home.
"I'm deaf and Ellie the dog is actually deaf. So we basically love each other very much," AJ says. "I'm thinking that for Christmas, [Noni] from heaven like controlled everyone to adopt the dog for me."
Ellie was rescued by Bonnie's Animal Rescue Kingdom in North Carolina. The Vercelli family is now teaching Ellie some modified sign language.
