Fire destroys American Legion Post 152 in Newark

An early morning fire destroyed American Legion Post 152 in Newark Thursday.

The building was located on the 200 block of Elizabeth Avenue.

Flames, black smoke and bitter cold temperatures gave firefighters a tough time fighting the blaze, but they were finally able to put it out.

Members say the destruction of the post is a real loss.

"We have a clothing drive every year, we have a coat drive. We just finished up our holiday drive in which we give toys to the children here in the city," says member Kamal Brown.

Post commander Michael Jackson says he hopes the building can be rebuilt.

"We're going to rebuild it one way or another. Hopefully our veterans can come on board and help us out, hopefully the city of Newark can help us out," he says. "We're looking for all the help we can possibly get."

The building was empty at the time of the fire. No one was hurt fighting the blaze.
