Man charged in death of college student also accused of killing 33-year-old Joanne Brown
Authorities say that the man charged in the murder of a New Jersey City University student is now accused of killing another woman in a separate crime.
Khalil Wheeler-Weaver, 20, of Orange, was charged in the murder of 33-year-old Joanne Brown.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says Brown was last seen Oct. 22 in Orange and reported missing later that month. A work crew found her body Dec. 5 at a vacant house in Orange. Murray says she was strangled.
Wheeler-Weaver recently pleaded not guilty to the murder of 20-year-old Montclair resident Sarah Butler. Butler's body was found covered with leaves inside the Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange on Dec. 1
The two cases seem to share several similarities. Both women were reported missing and later found strangled.
Officials say that Wheeler-Weaver was an acquaintance of Butler, and the two saw each other several times on the day of her death. Authorities say that there is no immediate indication that Wheeler-Weaver and Brown knew each other.
The prosecutor's office did not say if the two cases were related other than the fact that Wheeler-Weaver is accused in both.
Wheeler-Weaver remains in jail on $5 million bail and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.
Anyone with information on either crime is asked to call the prosecutor's tips line at 877-847-7432.
