88-year-old woman nearly crushed by tree that crashed into bedroom ceiling

An 88-year-old woman escaped serious injury after a tree came crashing down onto her bedroom ceiling.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday on Katherine Street. Police say that the woman, identified only as Ruth, was lying in bed when the tree fell down. Police say the tree cracked the ceiling, but it did not collapse.

Ruth was able to get out of the home and call 911, but had to leave her cat behind. Neither Ruth, nor the cat were injured. She will stay with her son while repairs are made to the home.

The tree was located in the backyard. Large branches from the tree were seen in the front of the home.

Officials have not said what caused the tree to fall, but Tuesday's heavy rains may be to blame.
