Fire rips through Mount Olive apartment
A woman and her young children were left homeless Sunday after a fire tore through their apartment.
The fire broke out just after 5:30 a.m. on the 100 block of Stedwick Avenue.
Officials say the fire started in the kitchen of the apartment where a woman and her three young children lived.
No one was injured.
Neighbors rushed over to help the family extinguish the fire, but they were unable to do so.
"At first we tried to help," says Kevin Jean-Pierre. "They had a fire extinguisher, but by the time they were ready to use it, it already spread too much."
Jean-Pierre and his aunt also went door-to-door to make sure all of their neighbors were out of harm's way.
Fire officials say the first floor of the two-story apartment unit is unlivable and most of the property inside of it is damaged.
The Red Cross is assisting the family and trying to find them a place to live.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
