The New Jersey Devils Friday night honored the life of a prep school hockey player who died while spear fishing earlier this year.
The team honored 17-year-old Jeff Hoens, of Westfield, with a pre-game ceremony at the Prudential Center.
Westfield was a goaltender for the St. Peter's Prep hockey team in Jersey City.
Hoens's family and teammates were on hand for the special occasion.
His individual player jersey is now on full display at the venue, on a wall which exhibits the hockey jerseys of every high school team in New Jersey.
Hoens's friends called him "The General" because of his strong leadership skills and ability to make everyone comfortable.
Proceeds from Friday night's ticket sales will go to a scholarship fund created in Hoens's memory.
