New York Jets team up with ShopRite, donate food
Delivering food to those in need is a tradition for some former New York Jets greats.
Team alumni Marty Lyons, Tony Richardson and Fred Baxter were joined by members of the Jets Flight Crew Cheerleaders in Hillside.
The former players teamed up with ShopRite supermarkets to donate 2,300 frozen turkeys, 2,000 bags of carrots and 2,000 pounds of potatoes to the Community Foodbank of New Jersey.
The supermarket's annual holiday donation is a longstanding tradition, enabling families to sit down for a traditional Thanksgiving meal.
"When you actually go to the agencies and the soup kitchens and you see people lining up and having that dignity and having that meal, you know that your $1 gift to us has become $10 worth of food to the community," says Karen Leies, of the food bank.
The members helped unload the donations for distribution to food pantries, soup kitchens and other organizations.
ShopRite has donated more than a million pounds of holiday turkeys over the last 17 years to food banks in the region.
