3 people killed when car hits tree in Orange

Three people were killed when a car slammed into a tree and burst into flames in Orange early Saturday morning, authorities have confirmed.
The crash happened around 1 a.m. on Tremont Avenue near Sylvan Way.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has identified the victims as 36-year-old Shaquan Dennis, of Irvington; 35-year-old Safiyyah Scott, of Newark, and 30-year-old Michael Nelson, of East Orange.
Investigators say Dennis was driving at the time. A preliminary investigation has determined that speed was likely a factor in the crash, officials say.
The crash happened in a 25 mph speed limit.
A man who lives in the home where the crash happened says he awoke to a loud bang and felt his building shake, as though the car had hit the structure and not just the large tree out front.
He says it has been the scene of several previous crashes, including fatal crashes. He says he pushed for a 25 mph speed sign in the area, and now will call for more changes to improve safety.
Tremont Avenue has since been reopened.
