Investigators suggest Toms River police shooting was suicide attempt

A police-involved shooting Sunday night may have been an attempt at suicide by cop, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
Officials say the man who was shot called 911 to report a man with a gun in the area of Sandy Creek Lane in Toms River. When officers arrived, prosecutors say the man who made the call was walking toward them with his hand behind his back.
When officers told the man to show his hands, he allegedly pulled out a black object. Police say the officers fired nine shots and hit the man twice.
Police say the black object was a television remote control that the man had apparently taken from a hotel room. Investigators believe he intentionally caused a confrontation with police.
The man is in critical but stable condition at the hospital.
