Mother, boyfriend charged in death of 7-year-old Newark boy

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has charged a mother and her boyfriend in connection with the death of a 7-year-old boy in Newark.
Chief Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly says Newark police received a 911 call Sunday morning for a child who was injured inside an apartment on North Munn Avenue. Paramedics provided aid and took the boy, identified as Michael Moore Jr., to University Hospital.
Moore died from his injuries about an hour later.
Prosecutors charged the boy's mother Khadejrah Rawls and her boyfriend Christopher Spearman in connection with his death. The boyfriend was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated assault. The mother was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Both are being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility.
Fennelly says the cause and manner of the boy's death is under investigation and is pending autopsy results. Fennelly says there are likely to be additional charges.
There were four other children living in the apartment at the time, according to officials. They have been removed from the home by child protective services.
