Jersey Shore towns up security in wake of recent bombings
Towns along the Jersey Shore are beefing up security in the wake of last weekend's bombings and are urging people to be vigilant.
Asbury Park Police Chief Tony Salerno says that significant security improvements have been made behind the scenes, but says the average visitor will not notice much of a difference.
Salerno says he doesn't want to alarm people with officers at every corner, but says the public should know precautions are being taken.
The beefed-up security comes after the explosives went off last weekend in Seaside Park, Elizabeth and New York City. The pipe bomb that exploded during a 5K race in Seaside Park last week has prompted other shore towns to remove garbage pails before events.
Asbury Park has left its trash cans on both the boardwalk and beach.
"Well, garbage cans aren't the only place that one can hide an explosive device and we take certain precautions with whatever is out there," says Salerno.
Several shore towns are holding large events this weekend, including races in Lake Como and Keyport. Authorities say extra security measure will be taken at all events.
